“Children of Adult Hospice Patients” featuring Dr. Paul Thayer

This 40-minute program prepares members of the hospice interdisciplinary team to help children or grandchildren of hospice patients cope with the impending death. This session outlines children's cognitive and emotional responses by age to the dying process, and ways that hospice staff can assist families who have younger children and teens.

Paul Thayer, M. Div., D. Min., is an Assistant Professor of Child Life and Family Studies at Wheelock College in Boston.  Dr. Thayer teaches courses on child health systems, clinical issues and program development as well as courses on grief and loss. Each year, he teaches a course in Singapore on Helping Children Cope with Stress. His research interests include spiritual care of children, professional boundaries, and helping children cope with loss. He is a facilitator of the Kenneth B. Schwartz Rounds to promote compassionate care and an advisory member for the New England SERVE initiative.  Prior to teaching at Wheelock, Dr. Thayer was Director of Sandcastles Pediatric Hospice; Director of the Chilton House Residential Hospice; and, the Director of the Hospice at Mission Hill, the nation’s first inpatient AIDS hospice.
